BFAST Triathlons

It is with great sadness Beaches Fine Arts Series announces the BFAST Sprint & Olympic Triathlons will not be held in 2018.
This wonderful fundraiser has supported the free concert series and educational outreach programs of BFAS for over 30 years, and we are extremely grateful for the support of our wonderful Participants, Sponsors, Volunteers and Service Providers.
As a 3-event series, our participant numbers had steadily decreased over time while at Mickler’s Landing before moving the race series to Naval Station Mayport in 2013.  Moving to NSM was advantageous because it significantly reduced our expenses so to work more favorably with the decreased number of participants; however, increased security constraints at the base resulted in the races being moved back to Mickler’s Landing in 2016.  Upon returning, the participant numbers did not support a 3-race series, so it was then decided BFAS would hold a single weekend event with a Sprint and Olympic distance triathlon in 2016, and subsequently in 2017.  Unfortunately, necessary operational expenses including Police, along with Fire and Rescue, increased dramatically in 2017.
This past fall, a budgetary review was conducted by the Board of Trustees in adherence to the goals set forth in our recent BFAS Strategic Plan.  The review resulted in the Board determining the triathlons are no longer as significantly impactful to the budget as a fundraiser as they were during the first 25 years.  In addition, the Board recognized the increased saturation of similar events in Northeast Florida with the Jax Tri Series moving to downtown Jacksonville in 2018 and holding one of the triathlons on our traditional Saturday in July.
Annual fundraisers which support Beaches Fine Arts Series must adhere to a model that includes reasonable time spent on effort, expense control, and financial performance.  Unfortunately, the races were no longer able to meet those standards in a sustainable fashion.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees and Staff of Beaches Fine Arts Series, we want to thank our wonderful Race Board, Sponsors, Service Providers and Volunteers, who ensured our races were professionally run and always safe for triathletes.
Lastly, we want to thank our Participants, especially those loyal triathletes who returned each year to compete in our races, knowing their endeavors were supporting a free community concert series that has been in existence over 45 years.
We hope you have many fond memories of our races as we do!
